Registration is now open for the Museum of Natural and Cultural History’s 2015 summer camps.

Museum camps blend fun, hands-on activities with meaningful learning. At the museum and elsewhere on the University of Oregon campus, campers ages 7 to 11 dig deep into archaeology, paleontology, nature, and history.

Session fees are $195 for museum members and $245 for the public. We offer a 10 percent discount for families with more than one child attending camp.

Youth & Family Rock Climbing Lessons

Registration for all spring quarter rock climbing lessons starts on Monday, March 2nd at the SRC Service Center!

Session 1: April 4-28

Session 2: May 2-30 (no class May 23rd for Memorial Day weekend)

Family Rock Climbing Lessons: Designed for families who want to learn to climb together! Family rock climbing lessons teach parents the skills necessary to safely climb with their children in an indoor climbing gym. The focus will be on fitting harnesses, tying knots, belaying, and climbing commands. The curriculum taught will give parents the skills necessary to pass the belay test at any indoor climbing facility. Price includes 1 adult and 1 child. Additional adult or children may also enroll at a cost of $15 per participant. A maximum ratio of one adult per 3 children is permissible.

Ages 5+

Saturdays, 10:15-11am

Youth Rock Climbing Lessons: Youth rock climbing lessons are designed to give your child all the skills necessary to safely climb on their own in an indoor climbing environment. We will teach them basic knots, spotting techniques for bouldering, belaying skills, and movement principles. This is a great starting point for your aspiring alpinist to learn the fundamental skills to climb safely.

Ages 11+

Youth Swim Lessons

Registration for swim lessons Session 1 starts on Monday, March 2nd and registration for Session 2 begins on April 13th at the SRC Service Center.

Starfish Swim School®: UO PE & Rec proudly offers Starfish Swim School for Preschoolers (ages 3-5) and Youth (ages 6-12). Each class runs 30 minutes in length on Saturday mornings.

Two separate 4-week series of lessons will be offered spring quarter. The Session 1 youth swim schedule is available for viewing online now!

Winter Quarter, Wednesdays 3:00-4:00pm in EMU Rogue River Room

Are you feeling stressed? Be Well Wednesdays is an interactive workshop offered weekly where you can learn to identify and manage your own stress through relaxation and stress management techniques. You will be provided with a better understanding of the nature of stress by exploring signs and symptoms, sources and triggers, and underlying functions. We will discuss a variety of stress reduction and management strategies and by the end of the workshop you will be able identify the strategies that are right for you. The goal is to provide you with the tools and techniques to respond to your daily life stressors in a positive way and to ultimately feel less stressed. Complimentary tea and snacks will be provided!

The Symposium for Mindfulness and Society was created to highlight the research being conducted by UO faculty and graduate students on the neurological basis of mindfulness practices such as meditation, tai chi, and yoga. Meditation has long been associated with a sense of inner calm and physical relaxation. Researchers at the UO are now finding that meditation and mindfulness can lead to improved learning and attention as well as increased self-awareness, compassion, and introspection.

Change Your Brain by Transforming Your Mind: Neuroscientific Studies of Meditation

Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison

Richard Davidson is a pioneering neuroscientist, founder of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and named by Time magazine as one of the world’s most influential people. Davidson is best known for his groundbreaking work in studying emotion and the brain. His bestselling book, The Emotional Life of Your Brain, was chosen as this year’s Undergraduate Studies Common Reading: a book given to all first-year students as a way of sparking conversation while introducing them to the UO’s rich community of researchers and scholars.

Clifford Saron is an Associate Research Scientist at the University of California-Davis and Director of the Shamatha Project — a large-scale collaborative and multimethod longitudinal study of the effects of intensive meditation training. The Saron lab uses qualitative, self-report, behavioral, electrophysiological, and biochemical measures to begin to elucidate the many levels of personal and physiological change that accompany such training.

 

The Davidson lecture is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Undergraduate Studies Common Reading Program (with support from the Offices of the President and the Vice President for Student Life), and the Departments of Biology and Psychology. All events are free and open to the public. For sign language interpreting or other disability-related accommodations, please call 541-346-1221 before February 2nd. Davidson’s lecture will be ASL interpreted.

For new students this is for you: All of you have played with Legos but have you ever built a robot and made it do what you want? It’s easy to make your little brother or sister spin in circles, but can you make a robot go through a maze? Would you like to design, build and program robots to bend to your will? Find out what motion, light and touch sensors are. Start thinking like a robot!

For returning students: Steve has new challenges prepared! Learn more about precision measurement using multiple sensors and articulating grabber arms to precisely retrieve and relocate objects. Build on your skills to create an AWESOME robot.

For all: At the end of the session, prepare yourself and your robot to battle your classmates until only one intelligent, strategic robot remains standing!
