Rec-or-Treat at the Student Rec Center – October 23rd 2-4:30 PM

When full moons rise and jack-o-lanterns smile, it means that Rec-or-Treat must be right around the corner! The whole family will have a SPOOKtacular time at the 2nd annual Rec-or-Treat, a free event hosted by the University of Oregon PE & Recreation department on Sunday, October 23rd from 2-4:30pm at the Student Rec Center!

Children will enjoy Halloween-themed carnival games and activities to earn small (non-candy) prizes. All ages welcome, but activities are best suited for children ages 3-10.  Costumes are encouraged!

Welcome to the first graduate student families listserv! I’m Hilary Hunt, the new Graduate Families GE. My role is to support you by providing information and resources. Through this listserv, I’ll be sharing updates about valuable campus resources, events, and funding opportunities. Read on for financial assistance, parenting workshops, childcare, and events!

Financial Assistance

1) Graduate Assistance Fund

Receive $1,500 for the birth of a child during your graduate program! APPLY HERE.

2) Childcare Assistance

Receive financial support to pay for childcare if your child is under 18 months or adopted in the last 18 months at the beginning of or during your graduate program. Apply for childcare subsidies, childcare scholarships, tax credits and more. Resources HERE.

Events

1) FREE Parenting Workshops

Workshop topics include children’s’ brain development, how children deal with stress, and more. All these workshops are FREE with childcare and dinner provided by the Moss Street Children’s Center.

2) Science Open House on October 5th in the Willamette Hall Atrium, 6:30pm-8:30pm (FREE)

There are activities for children of all ages, including a laser maze, egg drop, and other cool experiments.

3) Fall Day Camp and Preschooler Activities on October 14th and Family Fossil Day on October 15th at the Museum of

Natural and Cultural History. Plus, admission is FREE on the first Friday of October!

4) Family Play and Resource Day on October 15th, 2:00pm – 5:00pm (FREE)

Swimming, crafts, music, food, and face painting all afternoon

5) Night at the Museum on October 19th, 5:30pm – 7:00pm (FREE)

Snacks, guided tour of the museum, socializing with other graduate students and bedtime storytelling. Great for all ages.

JSMA After School Programs

After-School Art Class: Sports, Art, and Product Design
Wednesdays, October 5-December 7, 3:30-5:00 p.m.
(no class on November 2 and November 23)
Grades 1-5, $90 ($81 for JSMA Members)
Inspired by the exhibition Scrimmage: Football in American Art from the Civil War to the Present and contemporary artists Catherine Opie and Shaun Leonardo, students will explore how images can illustrate significant events. Using Copic markers and mixed-media, students will create their own sports-related products, such as running shoes and helmets.

Maki-e Gold Leaf Decoration
Instructor: Mami Takahashi
Saturday, November 19, 1-4 p.m.

Scholarships are available for students
Discover the beauty of Maki-e decoration, which started in Japan in the 8th century. This technique is recognized worldwide for its delicate usage of gold and silver leaf and the commitment it takes to master this craft. This workshop includes a special presentation and hands-on session to learn how to use unique bamboo tools to pick up sheets of gold leaf and how to sprinkle gold leaf on rice paper. Participants will create works with different colors of gold leaf on a sumi ink (charcoal ink) background.
