Faculty and Staff Wellness Opportunity

Healthy Campus is about to begin another nine-week Course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). A very limited number of spaces still remain in this course.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is the most widely-studied and accepted program of its kind. It teaches participants how to harness their own innate abilities in order to diminish stress and pain, and to improve overall physical and mental health. It was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. in 1979, and is used in hundreds of schools, hospitals and other institutional facilities worldwide. Kabat-Zinn’s eight-week MBSR curriculum has been completed by more than 19,000 people since its creation.

What: A nine-week course (including the mandatory orientation) in stress reduction techniques, inspired by the curriculum pioneered over thirty years ago at UMass Medical School. As a pilot program, this course will be offered free of charge to approximately 35 individuals.

Who: Especially geared for UO faculty and staff, but open to everyone.

Where: Classes to be held on the UO campus.

When: Wednesday evenings from January 16-March 13, plus 1 full-day workshop on Saturday, March 2.

Registration: To register, please review the course requirements at http://healthyoregon.uoregon.edu/Events/MBSR. Spaces are extremely limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Submitting a pre-registration form does not guarantee enrollment.

About the Instructor: Lisa Myobun Freinkel is a UO literature professor as well as a lay-ordained Zen Buddhist. Trained in MBSR and Zen mindfulness meditation techniques, she has taught meditation in prison, hospital and university settings since 2007.
