Winter Weather Emergency Preparedness Training Session

Did the December 6th snow storm take you by surprise? Are you ready for a winter weather emergency?

Oregon winters can bring a range of hazards from snow and ice to rain or freezing fog. UO Emergency Management to offer a 1-hour Winter Weather Emergency Preparedness training on January 23rd from 12:00-1:00 pm. Come to learn about steps you can take at work and at home to prepare for any kind of winter weather including winter emergency supply kits, weatherizing your home, and winter driving safety.

Holiday Choral Concert

Four UO choirs will ring in the season with holiday and folk music from around the world, spanning from the 18th century to the present. The program will feature gospel music and drumming, as well as music from Polynesia, Ireland, and Africa. The performance will feature the Chamber Choir, University Singers, Repertoire Singers, and Concert Choir. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from the UO Ticket Office, 541-346-4363.

The UO’s gospel program celebrates thirty years of uplifting, high-energy music with an event honoring John Gainor, founder of the program; and former director Cedric Weary (who will also be a guest director for this concert). As part of the celebration, the UO is pleased to welcome the members of an alumni reunion choir featuring former stars of the gospel program. The concert will also feature holiday selections. Co-sponsored by Central Presbyterian Church. Funds raised will go to support Opportunity Village, a project that provides transitional housing for homeless individuals and couples. University of Oregon student brass chamber groups will alongside their faculty members in the Oregon Brass Quintet. The ensembles will perform holiday favorites, as well as other repertoire including selections from Donizetti’s “Elixir of Love,” excerpts from the fourth movement of Mahler’s 2nd symphony, and the traditional tune “The Cherry Tree.”

The UO School of Music and Dance is hosting a fantastic FREE musical Halloween event–perfect for families! The event will feature music, storytelling, costumes, and candy in a laid-back atmosphere. Kids are encouraged to attend in costume. This year we’re also starting a bit earlier in the evening, to accommodate bedtimes for the wee ones. The SpookTastic! concert will take place in Aasen-Hull Hall (room 190) of the Frohnmayer Music Building on the UO campus.

Costumes are encouraged, and best mad-scientists costume wins a prize!

This popular annual celebration has been expanded to include two extra evenings this year. Each of the four nights will include dancing, poetry, and live music by the Guanaxtecos from Sierra de Guanajuato, two special exhibitions commemorating the 100th anniversary of José Guadalupe Posada’s death, and workshops with Mexican artist Martín Guevara Luna in the art studio. An ofrenda, constructed by local students to celebrate the holiday, will be on view October 29-November 2.

Need to get away from your desk? Need to improve your social and/or physical wellness? Need a plan and support to stay motivated? Train for a 5K race with Healthy Oregon: A Healthy Campus Initiative.

JOIN US STARTING SEPTEMBER 30TH IN THE STUDENT REC CENTER LOBBY AT 5:00pm

Healthy Oregon, A Healthy Campus Initiative and it’s partners are joining forces to bring you a 6-week 5K training program that culminates with participation in the 2013 Run with the DUCK 5K race on November 9th , 2013 @ 9:00am on Hayward Field.

The training program uses a combination of weekly groups training sessions and individual workouts to help you get in shape, feel great and train for a 5K event. There are three different training programs offered: Walk, Walk-to-Jog and Run. The program is designed so that you could follow the training calendar entirely on your own, but participation in weekly training sessions is HIGHLY encouraged for support, motivation, challenge and variety. Personal training staff lead weekly group training sessions – you can attend any and all sessions that fit your schedule and goals.

Important Information
· Training Dates, Times & Locations: Sept 30 – Nov. 9th 2013 Monday and Wednesday at 5:00pm in the Student Rec Center Lobby. No sign-up necessary.

Which Training Program is Right for You?

· Walking: This training program is designed for walkers who have a goal to improve their fitness in order to walk a full 5K at a faster pace than normal walking. Program will include interval training, cross training and a variety of walking routes and challenges!

· Walk-to-Jog: This training program is designed for walkers and new runners who have a goal to improve their fitness or performance in order to jog or run a full 5K or part of a 5K with some walking. Program includes interval training, cross training, and a variety of walking and jogging routes and challenges!

· Running: This training program is designed for intermediate/advanced runners who can complete or nearly complete 5K running distances and would like to improve their fitness and performance. Program includes interval training, cross training and group sessions using a variety of speed and strength drills and running terrains.

YES! Even if you do not participate in the 5K Training Program, you can still sign up to walk, jog or run the 5K race separately.

Agate Playground Clean-Up

Join the Outdoor Program in giving back to the neighborhood as we clean up Agate Playground (just down the street from the OP Barn). We will remove trash, clean equipment, and spread mulch. UO will be providing materials and tools. Come help beautify a park for UO families and the community! Pre-register at the OP Office or Barn.
